Life’s Lessons

Written By Paul Saunders

The following account is true story. I gave this to my son who is graduating from high school in June.

I am not sure why, but I feel that I should share these thoughts with everyone...

Dustin,

I woke up this morning at 4 AM from a dream that I cannot remember...all that I can remember are these random thoughts. I couldn't get them out of my head so I had to write them down. It seems appropriate at this time in your life that I share these thoughts with you – I think it is what I am supposed to do.

Life is a series of challenges, like the rise and fall of the tides, we must rise and overcome. Sometimes the challenges will seem overwhelming and that you cannot move forward, but the tide will ebb and you will overcome each and every challenge you encounter.

Stay true to yourself. Be uncompromising if you must but only when it is necessary. Learn the art of compromise as it is what makes us beholden to others.

Always keep sight of your goals, but as you strive for them enjoy the journey as you go through life. Time goes by fast so remember to always stay in the “here and now” while making plans for the future.

Your family is your biggest asset and makes up what you are, both the good and the bad. Do not forget those who have come before you, remember that you have a piece of each of them in you. Try to learn from those who have come before you, their experiences are timeless and priceless. Seek out their advice and counsel when making plans and you will be smarter than you could ever be on your own.

You will learn the lessons of life by making mistakes some big, some small – just remember that in this way you are no different than anyone else.

Nothing in this life is free, if it seems too good to be true it probably is! Be mindful of your instincts (your “gut feel”) – if something does not feel right or someone does not seem truthful, then it's probably best to stay away.

Respect those in authority, but remember that they can and will make mistakes so be careful taking anything on face value. Challenge others respectfully and they will respect you.

Make things right when you do wrong and good things will come to you. Take all the good and bad in life to heart and turn each experience into a positive thought and you will prosper.

No matter where you go or what you do, remember that I will always be with you and always be very proud of you. If you ever need anything all you have to do is ask.

Love, Your Father
